I’m getting back in the photography business again!
But first a slight, but related, detour — July marked my 50th anniversary of walking into a darkroom and seeing a picture develop before my eyes. It marked 50 years since I began my journey as a photographer and business person. As a few of you know, I was a professional photographer for 25 years before falling in love with online and online marketing.
I have decided to venture back into the world of professional photography. I am launching TOPS Photo Training, a photo training company where seasoned photo professionals (myself included) and creative directors teach advanced digital shooters how to improve their photography and their shooting experiences. I intend to blend photography experience with Internet marketing and online strategy to create a great knowledge experience for our students.
Currently in the planning stages are:
- Seminars (virtual and in-person) – our first will be “Photography for Bloggers: Shooting, Selecting and Optimizing Photos for Your Blog” – a virtual seminar starting in early September.
- Fantasy Photo Camps – on-location events where students will experience the pro experience as well as go to locations that are closed to the indivividual photographer or too expensive for most digital shooters. We are planning an camp event in Monument Valley or Mammoth, CA — wild horses, great scenery, cowboys, cowgirls, campfires, etc. Another camp will be a Hollywood Fantasy Photo Camp where the campers will get to shoot on various Hollywood movie ranches and backlots with working actors.
- Mentoring – almost everyone can use a little help and encouragement to reach their next level of knowledge and skill — we will be offering Group Mentoring (Coaching) as well as individual one-on-one sessions with various seasoned profesionals.
- Free “TOPS Tips” Reports – we are currently editing “10 TOPS Tips for Web Photo SEO” and “10 TOPS Tips for Outstanding People Photos for the Web.“
- Keynote Speaking - I am completing “Shooting the Bull: Creating Powerful Visual Communications in a Twitter World“

Sounds great, John. Sign me up. I was just thinking I needed to take a class in photography and here you are ready to teach me. The universe does work in mysterious ways doesn’t it? I think many of us (even sans heart surgery) are feeling a need to return to our creative roots so it doesn’t surprise me that you too are going back to yours. Glad to join you for a new adventure.
